Roster Update

Interim increase to hourly tariff rate and Financial Eligibility Guidelines

October 5, 2022

Effective at 12 a.m. on Oct. 6, the Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General has authorized an 8.225 per cent interim increase to the tariff rate.

This brings the hourly tariff rate to $100 from $92.40. Block fees will also be increased accordingly.

Financial Eligibility Guidelines (FEGs) have also increased by 8.225 per cent, increasing the number of Albertans who will qualify for legal aid.

Please note that any offers you accept before 12 a.m. on Oct. 6 will be paid at the current hourly rate ($92.40). If you accept offers after 12 a.m. on Oct. 6, you will be paid at the new increased hourly rate ($100).

Roster Lawyers’ Tariff of Fees

Ministry controls tariff rate, not LAA

Though LAA does not control the tariff rate of pay for roster lawyers or the Financial Eligibility Guidelines, LAA has worked diligently and co-operatively with our partners to facilitate this interim solution.

In addition to the interim increases, the Ministry has also committed to a full, fair and comprehensive assessment of the tariff rate and Financial Eligibility Guidelines in spring 2023. Legal Aid Alberta will be an active participant in this process.

Tariff modernization continuing

LAA is continuing with modernizing the tariff structure for roster lawyers to reduce the administrative burdens of providing legal services.

Roster lawyers are integral to the work we do at LAA. The modernized tariff will be enhanced with feedback from and consultation with the roster and support from the Ministry. We are committed to working collaboratively with our partners and look forward to rolling out a consultation schedule soon.
