Our next chapter in Alberta’s justice story
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Albertans face moments that can alter the course of their lives — family breakdown, criminal charges, immigration challenges. In those moments, access to legal counsel isn’t optional. It’s essential.
Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) is proud to share our new 2026-2029 Strategic Plan. This plan builds on our previous work and sets our continued direction. At the heart of this plan remain our three priorities: Quality. Access. Accountability.
These priorities shape how we deliver services, support clients and work with partners across the justice system to improve legal outcomes for disadvantaged Albertans.
“As we navigate economic, social and political changes near and far, we remain focused on working with our partners and delivering on our commitments to Albertans,” said John Panusa, President and CEO. “Together, we protect the rule of law for the benefit of everyone.”
Over the next three years, LAA will:
Continue to raise the standard of representation so every client receives effective, high-quality legal counsel when it matters most
Expand access across the province by meeting people where they are, through community partnerships, technology and culturally responsive programs
Reinforce accountability as a trusted steward of public resources and a collaborative partner in the justice system
Responding to a changing landscape
While our priorities remain constant, the environment in which we operate is evolving. Population growth and increasing social and economic pressures are driving greater demand for legal services, and more complex client needs — putting pressure on the justice system and on the people who rely on it most.
Behind every case is a person navigating more than just the law. Many also experience family violence, mental health challenges or systemic barriers at the same time. This plan is built for that reality.
A strong foundation for the future
Legal Aid Alberta is a critical and essential part of Alberta’s justice system — helping to ensure that rights are not just defined but protected. When access to justice improves, outcomes improve and not just for individuals, but for families, communities and the justice system as a whole.
“This plan is about building on what works and strengthening how we deliver,” said Panusa, “so that access to justice in Alberta is consistent, effective and available to those who need it — because justice is for everyone.
Quality. Access. Accountability.
