Judicial Interim Release Webinar Series

Legal Aid Alberta is producing a five-part educational webinar series on bail, running from mid-May to August, delivering the practical knowledge, insights and experiences of seasoned LAA staff and roster lawyers. 

 

This deep-dive series has something important for lawyers across the province. Each session will run from 12 noon until 1:15 p.m. and will be available for on-demand viewing on this page. 

 

 LAA is kicked off 2026 with a three-part series on the intersection of metal health and criminal law. The first session is on Jan.15, learn more.

  • JP bail vs COJ vs 469 offences
  • Obtaining bail packages/file summaries
  • How to run a bail when charges in multiple jurisdictions
  • Gathering bail plan information, verifying, etc.
  • Procedural particularities in different courts: 265/353, 267, 268, 444, regions (e.g. attending 265 early to get onto 353 list for afternoon)
  • Revocation

Part Two: Preparing for a JP bail hearing

Topics covered:

  • Obtaining bail packages/file summaries
  • Gathering bail plan information, verifying, etc.
  • Common issues at the JP bail stage (e.g. revocation)
  • Protecting the record

Part Three: Getting bail in challenging circumstances

Topics covered:

  • Putting together a treatment bail (application, medical, crafting conditions)
  • Ankle monitor program
  • Running a bail in specialty court (MHC or EIC)
  • What to know about cash and surities

Part Four: Charter issues and bail

Topics covered:

  • Different types of applications that can be used to enforce bail rights
  • Need-to-know case law (e.g. Reilly, Levesque, etc)
  • Protecting the record
  • Obtaining information from client that will assist with a Charter application

Part Five: KB bail and detention reviews

Topics covered:

  • Need-to-know case law (e.g. Myers)
  • Filing materials for a KB bail
  • Fitting your bail plan to the enumerated grounds
  • Challenges that often arise when attempting to file a completed order
