How to help when your client is facing family violence issues

November is Family Violence Protection Month – a time to raise awareness of this issue and take action to end it. Our clients are often struggling with difficult personal circumstances in addition to legal challenges.

There are a number of ways roster can help clients facing family violence issues.

First and foremost, anyone dealing with an emergency situation should call 911.

Protection orders

LAA duty counsel in Calgary and Edmonton can help those facing family violence apply for an Emergency Protection Order in person at those courthouses, during business hours. This is a free service.

After hours, or for those living outside of these areas, clients should call the police at any time or apply online for an EPO – a justice of the peace will contact your clients and hear the application.

Application forms for King’s Bench Protection Orders and Restraining Orders are available online on the Alberta Courts website. Bookmark this page for future reference.
