On Dec. 4, the Government of Alberta introduced Bill 14, the Justice Statutes Amendment Act 2025, which proposes changes to several pieces of legislation. Among the proposed changes in Bill 14, there are key, meaningful and positive developments for Legal Aid Alberta (LAA). The amendments support LAA’s long-term sustainability and provide clarity about the timing of Alberta Law Foundation funding.
What this means for LAA
New language in the Legal Profession Act sends a strong signal about the importance of our work and further strengthens our partnership with the Government of Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta. The changes specify that the minister, society and LAA “shall enter into an agreement” that delivers legal aid to Albertans.
Further changes also reinforce that the Alberta Law Foundation is required to help ensure resources are available to provide vulnerable Albertans with affordable access to legal services. Changes clarify the timing of payment, which provides important stability and sustainability for LAA’s mission to ensure access to justice for all Albertans.
These proposed changes are the result of open and respectful collaboration between LAA, the Government of Alberta and our partners. They reflect a mutual understanding of the value of legal aid and the importance of protecting access to justice.
