Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) offices and phone lines will be closed in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
On Sept. 30, we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, a day dedicated to remembrance and reflection, acknowledging both past and present, and committing to making a difference now and in the future.
The day honours the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools and the families and communities forever impacted. It is a time for reflection, remembrance and a renewed commitment to reconciliation.
In recognition, Legal Aid Alberta will close on Tuesday, Sept. 30, providing team members the opportunity to personally reflect and learn, and take time to engage in Indigenous activities.
Our Contact Centre phone lines will be closed, with regular hours resuming on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 8:15 a.m.
Most court services, including duty counsel, will be unavailable due to court closures. However, urgent support will remain available for:
- Individuals who have been arrested
- Those who need to speak to bail the same day they are detained
- Albertans experiencing domestic violence
As we work alongside Indigenous individuals and communities, and within Indigenous courts, we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying Indigenous voices and addressing the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in the justice system.
Legal Aid Alberta encourages all Albertans to explore resources that foster understanding, healing and support for Indigenous well-being.
