The year is 2017. Unicorn food has taken over the food industry, Luis Fonsi’s Despacito is the top song in Canada and Legal Aid Alberta welcomed 28 new faces, including Family Lawyer Jessica Chapman.

Five years later, the unicorn trend is long gone and Despacito has been replaced by Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift. Chapman on the other hand, continues to help families in Alberta get the support they need.

“Working for Legal Aid Alberta for the past five years has given me the chance to practice in areas of law that serve Alberta’s most vulnerable people,” says Chapman. “It has allowed me to participate in policy discussions and work with an incredible group of people, and I am grateful for all the opportunities that LAA has given me.”

Chapman and 50 other team members are celebrating a combined 533 years with LAA.

Whether they’re working on the frontlines of the justice system or behind the scenes to support our operations, these individuals have dedicated their careers to serving Albertans. Right now, LAA is helping 35,000 Albertans in 75 communities in the province.

Meaningful work

LAA’s annual Long Service Awards recognize employees who have been with the organization at least five years, and then every five years after that. This year, one colleague marked an unprecedented 45 years at LAA.

Senior Advisory Counsel Andrea Doyle, who is celebrating 15 years at Legal Aid Alberta says: “no two days are the same at Legal Aid Alberta. The work is meaningful and you can make a big difference in someone’s life by ensuring they get access to justice.”

LAA has more than 300 staff located across the province. LAA teams help ensure fairness in the legal process, assisting families going through separation and divorce, and disadvantaged individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

“I am fortunate to work alongside fellow team members who continue to serve Albertans across the province,” says Doyle. “The years of dedication shows our commitment and values as an organization and only helps us further our mission.”
