Black History Month: learning from Black history to build stronger communities

Learning, listening and honouring Black brilliance across generations

February is Black History Month in Canada, a time to recognize and celebrate the histories, contributions and lived experiences of Black people and Black communities across the country.

The 2026 theme, 30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries, marks three decades of national recognition. It honours the lasting impact of Black Canadians who helped shape our country.

At Legal Aid Alberta, Black History Month reminds us that justice means hearing every voice. Black history is not separate from Canada’s story. It is an essential part of it.

Why Black History Month matters

Black History Month recognizes both legacy and progress. It honours nation builders who advanced civil rights and strengthened communities, while celebrating the creativity, resilience and leadership of Black Canadians today.

Legal Aid Alberta invites all Albertans to take part in ways that feel meaningful and accessible to you. Together, we can continue building a community where every story is valued and all voices are respected and heard.
