Mental health issues in criminal law

LAA is launching a three-part webinar series starting in January 2026, running from 12 – 1:15 p.m. The series will explore the intersection of mental health and criminal law, offering practical insights, knowledge and real-world experience from LAA staff and roster lawyers.

Part one, Jan. 16, features Amna Qureshi and Gillian Shiskin, who will discuss distinguishing mental illness from unfitness, interviewing with patience and addressing ethical challenges when a client’s account conflicts with reality.

Psychological testing in child welfare

LAA is hosting a virtual education session on Friday, Jan. 23 from 1 – 4 p.m. on psychological testing used in various types of child welfare capacity assessments.

The session will feature Dr. Valerie Massey, clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, and Ashley V. Massey, psychometrist.

This session will cover psychological tests commonly used in assessments — when they are most appropriate, what is involved in the testing, how results are standardized and how to challenge them.

Spend the afternoon learning about each test and their applications.
