New Board executive, 3 members appointed to Legal Aid Alberta Board of Directors

Brad Pickering appointed Chair; David Linder, KC, appointed Vice Chair; Roseanne Carey, Clint Warkentin and Tamar Epstein join Board

Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) is pleased to announce that Brad Pickering has been appointed Chair of the Board of Directors and David Linder, KC, has been appointed Vice Chair. In addition, we are excited to welcome three new members to our Board of Directors: Roseanne Carey, Clint Warkentin and Tamar Epstein.  

 

The appointments are effective Dec. 9, 2025, following the Board’s annual general meeting.

 

Pickering joined LAA’s Board of Directors in 2021 and brings extensive leadership in the provincial and municipal sectors. He served 17 years with the Government of Alberta in various senior leadership roles, including as deputy minister of several ministries: Municipal Affairs; Tourism, Parks and Recreation; Solicitor General/Public Security; and Sustainable Resource Development. Prior to his work with the province, he also spent 20 years in the municipal government sector. 

 

LAA extends our gratitude to outgoing Board Chair Ryan Callioux, KC, and Board members Owen Edmondson, FCPA and Hilary Rose, FCPA, for their leadership and dedication to ensuring all Albertans have access to justice and fair representation.

Get to know LAA’s three new Board of Directors 

Roseanne Carey | Edmonton 

Roseanne Carey is a chartered professional accountant (CPA, CA) who has spent most of her career providing strategic and advisory support to business clients. She is currently chief financial officer at the University Hospital Foundation, where her portfolio extends beyond traditional finance to include driving impact in the life sciences sector as a catalyst for innovation in health and health care.  

 

Previously, Carey operated her own consultancy, serving clients across technology, financial services, real estate, benefits and not-for-profit sectors. She holds the ICD.D designation and served as vice-chair and chair of the finance committee for the Mental Health Foundation. 

Clint Warkentin | Calgary 

As an accomplished C-suite executive, Clint Warkentin has spent over two decades guiding strategy and execution across publicly traded regulated utilities, private equity-backed energy companies and global corporate environments. Prior to his executive experience, he was a corporate and investment banker. 

 

Warkentin’s board experience spans several international and subsidiary corporate boards and non-profits, including serving as an audit committee chair. He is CPA, a CFA Charter holder and holds the ICD.D designation. He earned a bachelor of commerce from the University of Saskatchewan and completed the Ivey Executive Program. 

Tamar Epstein | Calgary 

Tamar Epstein is general counsel and corporate secretary at Vermilion Energy and brings more than 20 years of experience in legal practice and governance to LAA. Her career includes extensive experience as in-house counsel and executive leadership roles, complemented by sustained involvement in community service and board governance.  

 

Epstein currently serves on the boards of Calgary Economic Development and the PREP Society, contributes to the advisory committee at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and is active with the International Bar Association. She has also taught law-based courses at SAIT, Mount Royal University and the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education. Epstein remains committed to continuous learning, mentorship, principled oversight, and strengthening access to essential legal services across Alberta.   

About the LAA Board of Directors

LAA is governed and guided by a carefully chosen board of directors. The board makes decisions that are carried out by our executive and management teams. The board can consist of up to 11 members — with at least four members of the Law Society and three public directors.
