May 4, 2022 – Thank you for being on Legal Aid Alberta’s roster lawyer team.
This past year, you signed an agreement to partner with us and almost 1,200 other skilled lawyers from across the province to represent and support Albertans.
As you know, demand for legal help never stops. Many Albertans depend on us. We represent clients in more than 75 communities. Your commitment to the Legal Aid Alberta mission is particularly meaningful for those in remote areas who face significant challenges. Together, we are helping people start their lives again.
Last spring, we extended an invitation to roster lawyers and leadership from the criminal and family bar to provide feedback about LAA policies and the roster agreement. We want to thank the 100+ lawyers who participated in focus groups and information sessions. We know you are busy lawyers—your time and engagement are valuable to us.
You may have heard that as of the May 1, 2022 deadline to sign the agreement, some lawyers have made the choice to not continue taking new legal aid cases for a variety of reasons. To minimize impact on clients, we’ve made arrangements for those lawyers to keep their existing clients if they choose or request a transfer so a new roster lawyer can be appointed immediately.
Thank you again for being a member of the LAA roster and for your collaborative partnership in providing access to justice. We look forward to our continued work together in building a sustainable legal aid system and particularly for your valued input in the tariff review process.
