LAA staff wear purple to raise awareness about family violence

In 2018-19, LAA lawyers were able to help get 1,933 emergency protection orders issued.

November is Family Violence Prevention Month. To show support for ending family violence, staff from across Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) wore purple on Monday November 25, 2019.

Family violence is an all-too real experience for thousands of Albertans every year. In 2018-2019, LAA lawyers were able to help get 1,933 Emergency Protection Orders issued, assisting a total of 8,171 Albertans. We saw an increase in the number of people assisted by our EPO program in 2018-2019 as a result of greater focus on domestic violence throughout the judiciary and increased awareness of the program.

Our lawyers support EPO Claimants by representing them in court throughout the EPO application process. This can be an overwhelming, emotionally charged and confusing process for many. Our program makes the process easier and reduces those barriers.
