It is the law about the rights and responsibilities within families. In Canada, both federal and provincial laws apply to family law. For example, the Divorce Act is a federal law (enacted by the Canadian parliament) and the Family Law Act is provincial law (enacted by the Alberta legislature). Family law includes the law applying to the legal relationships and responsibilities that adults have toward children. Family law includes adoptions and the law around the care and protection of children. It also includes laws regarding the financial responsibilities former partners have to each other and how property is divided upon separation.
