Job Description

Reporting to the Team Lead, Internal Audit, some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Establish and maintain a risk-based approach to auditing, assessing risks, ensuring compliance and consistency in the application of Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) Rules and Policies, and performing in accordance with international auditing standards.
  • Accountable for effective outcomes from compliance monitoring through audit, investigation and recovery of legal fees and disbursements, as well as audit of key programs and initiatives such as the High-Cost Case Management Program, Roster Management, Enterprise Risk Management, and Information Management and Technology.
  • Exercise professional judgment based on audit principles and concepts to identify risks, and root causes of issues. Analyze identified issues to determine their potential impact, and provides recommendations for practical, efficient, and effective solutions to the issues identified.
  • Compliance Monitoring – The main responsibility will be to conduct routine compliance audit of Roster Lawyer Billing, i.e., random, and targeted post payment audits of lawyer billings to ensure compliance with LAA Tariff and other billing protocols, and reduce the risk of billing errors. When errors or patterns are identified, make recommendations to improve LAA billing process.
  • Able to carry data analysis and reporting using platforms such as, but not limited to, Power Bi, Tableau and others
  • Special Audits – Conduct special audits such as investigation of irregularities or potential fraud, or audit of specific areas based on urgent request by the Board or Management.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Commerce or a related field is required, preferably with a professional designation in Accounting (CPA, CMA) or Finance.
  • Certified or working towards Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification.
  • Audit and data analytics experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • In depth and practical knowledge in: Auditing, Accounting, Information Technology, Risk Management, Internal Controls; Strategic and operational business/ financial planning processes.
  • Knowledge of professional auditing standards, gained through a combination of academic education, work experience, and professional training.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in audit, particularly in the field of billing fraud, use of computer assisted audit tools. E.g., data analytics software, trends, or issues in the justice system
  • Knowledge of professional auditing standards, gained through a combination of academic education, work experience, and professional training
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influence skills to promote innovation, build consensus, and motivate others to accept and apply new concepts, or implement audit recommendations.
  • Proven skills in working with others and implementing creative approaches in resolving complex or sensitive issues with management and staff, as well as contracted lawyers or clients.
  • Strong relationship and network building skills and experience to consult.
  • Strong project management and time management skills to effectively manage conflicting priorities.
