Job Description
Reporting to the Internal Auditor, some of the key responsibilities include:
Ensure compliance and consistency in the application of Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) Rules and Policies and performing in accordance with international auditing standards
Conduct regular compliance audit of billing, i.e., random, and targeted post payment audits of lawyer contracts and associated billings to ensure compliance with LAA Tariff and other billing protocols and reduce the risk of billing errors
Make recommendations to improve LAA billing process
Represent audit on working committees and/or other projects and initiatives as needed
Provide support to external auditors, consultants, or other assurance providers as required
Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines for Internal Audit operations, including audit and investigation protocols
Keep current on emerging trends and best practices, in audit and industry
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, or a related field is required
Minimum 2 to 5 years of experience in related field. Combination of education and experience may be considered
Audit, or data analytics experience (or a combination of) will be considered an asset
Knowledge and Skills:
In depth and practical knowledge in compliance audits, including understanding and performing end-to-end compliance review.
Strong MS Office suite skills particularly MS Excel.
Strong strategic, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to formulate value add audits and recommendations.
Self-directed, with the ability to adapt and innovate to deliver effective and efficient audits.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and influence skills to promote innovation, build consensus, and motivate others to accept and apply new concepts, or implement audit recommendations.
Proven skills in working with others and implementing creative approaches in resolving complex or sensitive issues with management and staff, as well as contracted lawyers or clients.
Strong project management and time management skills to effectively manage conflicting priorities.
Ability to apply professional judgment and flexibility with appropriate consideration of political and organizational sensitivity and materiality.
