A: You can apply to become a guardian of your grandchild if you have had care and control of the child for more than 6 months. You can make this application if either you or the child lives in Alberta. The court will make a decision about your application based on what is in the child’s best interests. If you become a guardian of your grandchild, you gain all the rights and responsibilities of a guardian.
