Callers will speak with a legal services officer who will assess what type of services will best meet your legal needs. Depending on your financial eligibility, you may receive legal advice and/or brief services from a staff lawyer over the phone. In other cases, you be referred to other LAA services, an outside agency, or we may appoint a lawyer to represent you.
When you call
When you call the toll free number, you will hear a recording with a number of options to choose from. I Please listen carefully and select the one that best describes your situation.
What you will need
We suggest having a pen and paper with you when you call, so you can write down important information along the way. We also recommend having any documents related to your legal issue such as court documents, orders, notices, etc. with you.
What you will be asked
Services provided by LAA are determined first by the client's financial eligibility, and also by the type of legal issue they have. When you speak with a Legal Services Officer please be prepared to answer questions about:
- income
- assets
- employment
- marital status
- family size
- living arrangments
Proof of income such as bank statements or pay stubs may be requested.
Please be aware that while we do our best to serve you over the phone, you may be asked to visit one of our offices in person.
