Job Description:

Based in Edmonton, Legal Aid Alberta is currently seeking dynamic individuals for the position of JP Bail Duty Counsel.  Successful candidates would be required to represent clients at bail hearings at the Justice of the Peace hearing office and to advise and assist referrals to Legal Aid Alberta. 

Work will be done by shifts (6 days on 3 days off) – current shift rotation:  3 x Day shifts (7:30-3:30 or 8-4), 3 x Evening shifts (3:30-11:30 or 4-12), 3 x days off.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Duty Counsel service to clients in custody via phone, CCTV or in person, at bail hearings at the Justice of the Peace hearing office
  • Provide preliminary legal advice and information
  • Represent clients at the Justice of the Peace hearings, including conducting contested and consent release hearings; and possible resolution and/or resolution planning.
  • Refer clients to community resources or other recommended programs
  • Liaise with various business units within Legal Aid Alberta to assist with the client's application process
  • Communicate with other Legal Aid Alberta staff as necessary to assist clients with their upcoming appearances in docket court.    

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Law degree from a recognized law school
  • Membership in the Law Society of Alberta (or ability to become a Member)
  • Minimum 2 years experience in criminal law
  • Experience or education in areas of poverty law practice
  • Excellent working knowledge of criminal law and bail hearings
  • Good working knowledge of family, immigration and other areas of civil or administrative law is an asset
  • Excellent understanding of court and tribunal processes, with working knowledge of regional variances
  • Excellent understanding of police and arrest procedures, with working knowledge of regional variances
  • Excellent working knowledge of community resources available for accused
  • Knowledge of conflict management and Alternative Dispute Resolution techniques
  • Ability to operate databases, case management software and phone hardware and software
  • Computer literacy, particularly with regards to MS Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Ability to use web-based legal research tools and other web-based resources
  • Able to work in a high pressure environment and adapt quickly to change
  • Active listening, excellent communication skills and an ability to build rapport and convey empathy
  • Able to deal with people in conflict or crisis
  • Able to provide advice and information effectively and appropriately to low-income persons
  • Understanding of issues arising when dealing with persons from diverse cultures, persons from low-income or other disadvantaged groups and persons in distress
  • Enthusiasm for the provision of legal services to low-income persons and for improving access to justice
