Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) is currently recruiting candidates to fill three vacancies on its Board of Directors for two lawyers who are members of the Law Society of Alberta and one member at large (non-lawyer). Employees of Legal Aid Alberta, Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta and employees of Alberta Justice are not eligible.
Candidates with demonstrated experience, skill set, and track record in some or all of these are areas are required, in order to support the LAA executive and organization as a whole:
- Strategic planning and organizational theory
- Human Resources
- First Nations and Metis
- Low-income or disadvantaged individuals and communities
- Mental illness, substance abuse, and other developmental and health challenges
LAA currently provides more than 297,000 assists annually in the areas of criminal law, family law, child welfare, refugee and other civil matters. It is an independent, publicly funded, not-for-profit organization, incorporated under the Societies Act, which provides a broad range of services to enable Albertans to resolve their legal issues. It operates under a Governance Agreement among Legal Aid Alberta, the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General and the Law Society of Alberta. The Board of Directors governs LAA through policy, budget and business planning decisions. The Board of Directors consists of 11 members with a maximum of 6 lawyers and a minimum of 5 public members. Board candidates are recruited by a Nominating Committee, made up of representatives of the Law Society of Alberta, Alberta Justice, and Legal Aid Alberta, and are appointed by the Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta.
