New initiatives at LAA - How might they affect you?

As you found out right here on our website, Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) underwent a full review of the legal aid plan in 2009.  Out of that review, options were presented that focused on amending our service delivery model, so that we may continue to provide access to justice through quality legal services that are cost-effective and client needs-tailored.  One such amendment will take place starting April 6th when will temporarily reduce our Financial Eligibility Guidelines (FEGs)

FEGs

The outcome of this reduction will be that less Albertans will be able to qualify for full representation services from LAA.  However, with the establishment of the new Legal Services Centre (LSC), clients will be assessed based on legal need and services offered (such as mediation, limited scope representation and brief services) to address those needs.  It is expected that LAA will maintain its level of providing quality legal services to low-income Albertans.  Click here for more detailed information on the changes to the FEGs.

Choice of Counsel

In order to achieve success in these initiatives, LAA has made adjustments to its Choice of Counsel policy whereby clients will now not be guaranteed choice; however, clients will be able to indicate their preference while LAA reserves the right to appoint counsel.  Please click here for more detail behind the decision about this change.
