Restructuring Immigration & Refugee Service Delivery

By way of a pilot project, Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) is working restructuring the offering of Immigration and Refugee legal services.  Our revised outlook on these services will:

  • address the highest client legal needs in Immigration and Refugee services (I&R), while ensuring that only those matters which should proceed receive LAA assistance
  • providing varying levels of assistance while taking into account the ability of the typical client to navigate the I&R system
  • provide self-help supports to eligible clients who are capable of fully or partially taking carriage of their matter
  • use the most cost-effective service delivery methods, which may include both staff and roster lawyer services
  • provide supports to the Roster to aid in the provision of quality services within the constraints of time and resources
  • foster innovative and collaborative approaches to meet client legal needs
  • result in equitable service delivery across the province
  • not exceed the budgeted expenditures for I&R services

Roster lawyers are invited to one of two information sessions that will focus on the Immigration & Refugee Restructuring Project.  Venues are yet to be confirmed, but the dates and times are as follows:

Edmonton Session: March 22, 3:00pm - 5:00pm
